Martha Baartz is an established Saxophone player, who originated on the North Coast of NSW, lived in Melbourne for the last 12 years, and has recently based herself back on the Far North Coast of NSW. She has travelled and performed extensively at renowned Australian Jazz Venues such as Melbourne’s Bennett’s Lane, The Brisbane Jazz Club and many local and international festivals including the world famousGlastonbury Festival and The Edinburgh Festival.

 

 Martha is also a composer arranger, most well known for her compositions performed in The Baartz Freeman Sextet and on albums “South East” and “12 Salutations” https://soundcloud.com/tags/12%20salutations which are signed to labels Move Records and Newmarket, respectively, and has received Radio National airplay primarily on Mal Stanley’s “Jazz Track” program (ABC).

 

Martha has received Composition and recording grants, has recorded for the ABC and has studied in New York with people such as Barry Harris, (pianist with Charlie Parker) and David Liebman, (Saxophonist with Miles Davis).

 

She has performed with Australian Jazz greats such as Sandy Evans, Bob Sedergreen (2008 Don Banks award winner) John Hoffman (Buddy Rich Big Band) and Michelle Nicole and Kristen Berardi, (Wangaratta Jazz vocal award winner) to name a few. Martha has performed with Renee Geyer,and Australian Indigenous group, The Black Arm Band. She has jammed with David Liebman and Phil Woods at David Liebmans Master Class for Advanced Saxophonists, and has performed with some of Motowns Legends, The Funk Brothers, The Temptations, and Martha and the Vandalas.

 

 Martha’s compositions and choice of standard repertoire brings it home with delta blues, New Orleans funk, beautiful ballads and smooth swing. She expresses a tremendous depth of talent for writing, and interpreting beautiful Jazz standards, demonstrated over the years leading various successful bands.
